FAQs

What do you mean by “chronic illness”? What are the boundaries to the content that you are open to publishing?

This journal does not prescribe an all-encompassing definition of what a chronic illness is.

Our mission is to amplify the voices of those directly affected by these disorders, whether it is a patient (current or former), loved one, or a healthcare worker; we like to let our authors set the standard on the condition they are discussing (of course, with valid scientific backing). Réapparition’s role is to be the facilitator of this discussion; any chronic malady (based on the author’s characterization), whether physical or mental, is material that is fair game to be covered by Réapparition Journal.

Is Réapparition Journal a literary journal? A magazine? A blog? A science journalism source?

It is all of these things and whatever else our authors’ work turns our publication into.

What’s RJ? What’s Libre?

RJ is the short form of Réapparition Journal.

Libre is a division within Réapparition Journal that is currently accepting manuscripts for print publication.

Can I treat something I read in Réapparition Journal as professional medical advice?

No– Réapparition Journal is not run by medical professionals and nothing published in our journal (unless explicitly mentioned by a physician that we interview or publish) is meant to be professional medical advice. Furthermore, much of our content is written by patients of disorders; while reading about their experiences may be helpful, our journal is meant to comfort– not to cure.

I am an artist, author, or otherwise media-oriented person, and I have an exciting idea for a partnership with Réapparition Journal. Would RJ be interested in my idea, and if so, how should I proceed?

Réapparition is always interested in innovative ideas– they are, after all, the basis for the journal’s existence. If you have an idea that you would like to get in contact with us about, please email info@reapparitionjournal.org

I have the same condition as one of your authors and would love to discuss one of their pieces. Why don’t you have a public comments section on your website?

We are fully aware that we publish work on highly sensitive topics and that it must be difficult for authors to publish this work on a public platform. Consequently, we don't facilitate unsolicited public interaction with authors (we don't have public comments sections on our website for this reason). However, if a reader would like to get in touch with an author, upon the author's consent, we are of course happy to arrange that.

Do you have strict submission deadlines?

No, our submissions are always open and rolling.

I submitted my piece for the journal or blog but haven’t heard back– was my piece rejected?

It may not have been– please email queries about a submission only after a minimum of one month has passed after you submitted your piece.

I would like to join the editorial team, but I haven’t heard back since I applied. Does this mean my application has been rejected?

Your application may not have necessarily been rejected– send us a reminder email if you are still interested and are awaiting a decision!

I am thinking about submitting a piece but am hesitant regarding whether or not it fits the mission. Should I still submit it?

Submit it! You’ll only know if you submit it. Multiple submissions are welcome.

Can I submit again if I was already published in RJ, or if a piece of mine has been rejected by RJ in the past?

Yes! We encourage you to.

I’m not comfortable publishing my piece with my name on it. Can you publish my piece anonymously?

Yes. We are open to doing anything that is reasonable and within our power to make our authors feel more comfortable about publishing their pieces. We have, in fact, published anonymous pieces in prior issues.

does this journal endorse any political or religious views?

No. We are open to publishing varied opinions on subjects as long as they are conducive to the free expression of ideas, but the journal itself does not endorse any political or religious views.
